The Safest NFL Face Mask Ever?

Justin Tuck New York Giants Facemask 2012

New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck will be wearing an interesting new face mask in the upcoming 2012 NFL season, the Giants sent out a photo of the ultra protective look on their Facebook page earlier today.

Looking closer to a helmet a knight would wear with a suit of armour than a football helmet, it’s not the first time we’ve seen a player go on the super safe side when it comes to a face mask.

During the 1994 season San Diego Chargers’ offensive tackle Harry Swayne went with this similarly protective mask:Harry Swayne Face mask 1994

More recently current Giants (and former Dallas Cowboys) defensive lineman Chris Canty wore this mask plus face shield to protect his eyes after suffering a detached retina earlier in his career:

On the opposite side of the spectrum you have kicker Gary Anderson who wore nothing more than a single bar, old school style, up until he retired in 2004:

That one might be my fave of the bunch.

Yeah, the single bar! That's the ultimate look! I understand the idea of safety in helmet design, but the next step in this evolution will probably be a cross between a motor racing helmet and a fencing mask.

Didn't he wear this last season as well?

He probably also needs the plastic eye shield!
