Columbus Crew Add Patch to Honour Fallen Teammate

The Columbus Crew will be sporting a memorial patch on both their primary and secondary jerseys for the remainder of the season to honour the memory of Kirk Urso, the 22-year-old Columbus midfielder who died suddenly earlier this week.

There will be two versions of the patch, one in black for the primary and one in gold for the secondary jersey.  Both patches will feature Urso’s number 15 inside a circle and will be affixed to the upper-right of each players jersey front.

Columbus Crew equipment manager Rusty Wummel explained to theCrew.com:

“We kept (the design) within the style and tradition that we have established at the club in honoring those that have passed… We have two styles. The black will be used on the home kits and the gold will be used on the secondary kits, placement is above the Adidas logo.”

Wummel is referring to past memorial logos used by the Crew honouring founder and owner Lamar Hunt in 2007 and another honouring former head coach Tom Fitzgerald in 2005.

Columbus’s primary jersey is the yellow one.

Will they retire the number (very uncommon in soccer)? Otherwise it would have been even nicer to include the player’s initials or something to make it special, knowing that next season there will be a new number 15 playing for the Crew.
