Jacksonville Jaguars Going All-Black For Home Games

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced yesterday that this Sunday’s game against Cincinnati will be their last using teal as their primary home jersey colour.  Black will become the home uniform, the teal will be demoted to an alternate and worn, at most, twice a season.

Teal had been the primary home jersey colour for the Jaguars since their inaugural season in 1995, black was introduced as an alternate jersey colour beginning in 2004 and was worn once or twice a season until 2009.

Farewell to teal… these uniforms have been bumped to “alternate”

“After this Sunday’s game, we will wear black as our primary jersey and teal will be reserved for special occasions as our alternate jersey. Teal will continue to be a part of our uniform and our logo, but on the field our identity will grow in black jerseys.” – Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan

According to their Twitter account the Jaguars will be wearing black pants with the black jerseys, pair that up with the black helmet and you’ve got a head-to-toe black uniform. Fan reaction has been mostly positive so far but there has been some legitimate concern about a Florida-based home team switching to all-black for their home uniforms.

The new all-black home uniform will debut on October 9th in Jacksonville’s game against the Chicago Bears.

We have too many teams using unique colors (like teal). We don't have enough teams with black jerseys in sports. That's sarcasm, of course. At least it's not as bad as 10 years ago, when almost every team in sports added black to their color scheme and had black jerseys.

The Jags have had an identity crisis since NFL Creative Services ripped off the Jaguar automotive logo as their expansion mark and they had to give Jaguar all types of compensation to make up for the miscue. I'd suggest hitting the reboot button on Jacksonville and start over.

That stinks, because each Florida NFL team shared something in common color wise. The Bucs "took" Miami's orange and the Jaguars "took" their teal (or at least was fairly close). Even though J'ville has been out of sorts, I really liked their design and they should have stuck with it (how do you build tradition if you keep changing it?).

Why the Floridian teams are dropping out the teal? First the Marlins, now the Jags... Teal is a cool color, it doesn't seemed as a "trendy" color for 5 or 10 years, it may endure for years and years.

Some sort of meta-homage to the "home blackout" that is often already experienced in Jacksonville each week?

It's better than if they were to continue wearing white at home. That's the most annoying trend in sports, NFL teams wearing white at home. It is in fact white, not black, that is the most overused color in sports.

@Ruy, The trend of dropping teal started before the Marlins. It may not have been a Florida team, but the Anaheim Ducks did that back in 2006 or so.

Don't forget the Diamondbacks in I think 2005 or 2006. Not a great move by the Jags, but at least there's some teal in their black uniforms. Although black teal would be cool.

As a Jag fan it took me a while to warm up to the teal when I was young I preferred the black but now I like the teal it's teams identity and sets them apart from the rest but I can understand the move from a on the field stand point.

Other than the all white on the road they need to go back to the initial look they had. Very underrated look. But as far as the color they're wearing if it were 50 years ago with the different materials it'd be a bigger deal. But with the materials they're using today I don't think the difference between the black, teal, or white will be that big. I just wish they'd keep it from all black and leave the black pants for the road games. I hope they don't go all white on the road now.

Raiders East Coast? Head to toe black looks so cheap and semi-tough, better change the name to Jacksonville Undertakers or Leathermen.

If they're going to do black jerseys as their main home jersey, perhaps make the pants teal or white with a heavy teal accent. I think it should be teal main, black alternate personally. Mainly because black is too hot to wear in really any warm climate markets. Although the Saints have black as their main colour anyways and play indoors.

While I won't necessarily lament the loss of the teal unis, I wish they had done a bigger overhaul and chosen another colour instead of just going with black.
