Reds Announce “Los Rojos” Alternate Jersey

At Redfest over the weekend, the Cincinnati Reds revealed their alternate jerseys for 2013. The red jersey, with black-white-black placket and sleeve piping and “Los Rojos” across the front, will be worn primarily at home, but don’t rule it out being worn on the road, according to Reds COO Phil Castellini. From cincinnati.com:

“We’ll use it throughout the season at home games, with exact dates not determined. We might also do it on the road, for example, if we’re in Milwaukee at the same time they’re doing their Hispanic Heritage night.”

The Hispanic Heritage Nights have become a very popular one-off promotion, but this is the first time a Spanish script has ever been a full time alternate for a team, obvious examples like Los Angeles and San Diego notwithstanding.

Cincinnati, according to the most recent US census, has a Hispanic population of 2.8%.

The jersey is currently available to purchase on shop.MLB.com.

So let’s hear it from you. What do you think about these? Are you OK with the Hispanic Heritage jerseys becoming more prevalent in the sports world?

I think it is a curious trend. Are Hispanic People really happy with these shirts? Or do they prefer to wear the same shirts as everybody else? Being Dutch myself I would not particularly like my Reds shirt to read 'Roden' (Reds in Dutch). Or Rode Sokken (Red Sox). Or Berenwelpen (Cubs). This would probably only work for the Yankees (from the Dutch 'Jan Kees') as the word Yankees is a not so favourable nickname for the people of New Amsterdam, given by the English back in the days. Jan and Kees are very common given names in Holland. I heard yesterday that 'Kees' could also refer to 'Kaas' (meaning cheese in Dutch) as the English detested the smell of cheese surrounding the Dutch settlers. This Rojos shirt in itself is quite nice with the black and white piping, nice lettering and the mascot patch on the sleeve, but which pants will be going with it? There is going to be an ugly mismatch, as the Reds don't have pants with a corresponding piping as far as I know.

As long as these specialty uniforms are worn only once or twice a year, I'm fine with it. It's just a shame the Expos never did that with a French language uniform with Les Expos. N'est-ce pas?

At least they changed the word Reds to Rojos. Beats jerseys like El Heat or Los Spurs where they don;t even really change anything.

..not bad at all, just remove the word "Los", should read better. Here in the state of Chihuahua (México) we have a team named the "Rojos". looking forward for my team (Seattle) to have an alternate "Marineros" jersey.

Ugly and unnecessary. However it would have been nice if they didn't include the black jersey piping. This would have been a great time to only use red and white.

In Castillan-Spanish, there is no need to put the article "Los" in nicknames over jerseys. The Giants understood perfectly when they used the marvelous Gigantes jerseys.

Don't like the font (same as BP jerseys). I prefer their early 2000s looks better. Their regular home and aways are fine currently though.

As a Latino baseball fan here in the United States, I do not mind the fact that teams revert to Spanish nicknames on their jerseys. However, I agree that the article "LOS" is unneccessary on baseball uniforms. Then again, I would love to see a team use the article "THE" on an Anglo theme jersey sometime in the future (perhaps that can be something worked out for the 2013 or 2014 baseball season). I am not sure why the Reds are using Spanish theme alternative jersey, perhaps, it is to increase the fanbase across the country to the Spanish speaking communities. I guess we shall see.

Here's an idea... Instead of the script font for this jersey, use the regular C logo and just put Rojos where Reds usually is.

A good pure idea, but unfortunately too subtle to be marketable.

They unveiled them at Redsfest Friday and where trying to get us fans to buy them. Reaching the "hispanic" community. Theres no hispanics in Cincinnati. So much for America's past time.

I'm not really happy with this. Before you know it, other teams will copy that idea and we'll be seeing jerseys with spanish on them all over the place. We speak english. If you don't want to accept that or adapt, then get out.

I dont mind the once or twice a year heritage nights but this is just so unnecessary, I'm getting sick of these latino jersey's taking over as full time so overdone imo.

we let millions of illegals in every year and then when they refuse to learn our language we give in and change our team names? totally insane.

I totally agree. Its dumb that we conform to their standards when they are the ones who wanted to be in OUR country in the first place. If I moved to Germany I would speak German so that I could fit into their culture. I wouldn't make them learn English.

I expect this crap from the Laker and the Heat, but the Cincinnati Reds? Have people forgot this is America where the unspoken rule is English is our national language. I have always pulled for the Reds, but not anymore.

Surely you won't stop supporting a team over a Spanish spelling jersey they'll probably just wear once or twice a year.

I think the only time things like this should be done are for teams in heavily hispanic areas and only once or twice a year. They should also get rid of the los part. at least they used the actual spanish translation unlike the nba

  25. Robert Anthony

I just appreciate that they're actually using the Spanish translation of the team name for once. ...Is there a Hispanic community in Cincinnati though????

Just heard the Pirates are planning in using their 1970's throwbacks as their Sunday alternates at home. The Reds should do the same and just use the Spanish jerseys as a once or twice a year concept along with using their current red alternates as a Friday night jersey or vice versa with the throwbacks.
