New Dolphins Logo Appears on NFL.com

Written By:  •  Wednesday, March 27, 2013

NFL.com may have joined the club of those prematurely spoiling the unveiling of the new Miami Dolphins logo… So… is it fair to say our confirmation that it was legit last week was spot on?

On their NFL.com Predict the Pick draft feature the new Dolphins logo shows up amongst the list of teams making first round picks in next months NFL Draft and sure enough, it’s the one we posted about on Friday:

A screenshot of the NFL.com Predict the Pick game showing the new Miami Dolphins logo on the left hand side

Click here to see it on their site yourself (before they likely replace it with the old/current logo).

While that screen only shows you a portion of the logo, you can see the full logo by simply right-clicking the image and choosing to Open Image – leading you to this graphic, which we’ve enlarged slightly:

Or you can see it for yourself on their server by clicking here.

Miami is expected to unveil the new logo and uniforms officially on April 18th.

UPDATE (Mar 27/13 11:17am ET): NFL.com has removed the logo from the aforementioned draft page, now a blank spot shows in its place:

NFL.com has now pulled the new Dolphins logo off the site, a blank spot sits where it once was

UPDATE (Mar 28/13 8:03am ET): The Miami Dolphins have confirmed that the logo that appeared on NFL.com earlier yesterday is their new logo, an article was added to NFL.com to announce this.  Miami is now using the new logo as their Twitter avatar and all over their official website.  Official unveiling date is now set for April 25th when the club will unveil all their new logos as well as the new uniforms.

Some quotes from team CEO Mike Dee about the logo from that NFL.com article:

“It was leaked by somebody at Nike. We had always had a plan to kind of roll it out over a 30-day period, so we’re going to start rolling it out. But the logo is only one part of the announcement. It’s a complete re-branding of the team.”

“There’s a lot of history in this in that we went back to colors, the true aqua and the true orange that were part of the first 29 years of the franchise’s history, but the logo design itself and some other things you’ll see respect that tradition in the past but also have an eye on the 21st century Dolphins.”

That’s about as official as it gets. White facemasks, soul-less sleeker Dolphin. Could’ve been worse I suppose: they could’ve introduced black into their color scheme for no reason. Still waiting for the new unis before I make final judgement but I get the feeling they’re going to be wearing white almost always after this rebrand (which kinda sucks because they have such unique colors). Owell…

The link you posted for their server shows the old logo, but here is the link from the draft page: http://d2j70pariye1xh.cloudfront.net/cdn-13643310981/images/teams/full/logos/full/mia.png?1364327176

My one regret: that the dolphin isn’t jumping through the sun like it’s a flaming hoop.

Haha, aqua fresh. Fantastic! It looks weird when surrounded by the other logos: I think it’s the pointy sun burst (i like the old sun better)

  • Andy

Chris, do you know if they’re even trying to keep this under wraps or have they just done an atrocious job of it?

    Not feeling it.

Does anyone else think the are purposely ‘leaking’ the logo so people will actually care about the redesign? If they just did a press conference no one would care a day later but drawing it out with all the accidental slips is just a case of clever marketing

Aaaaand now the old (current) logo appears on the page. Ha-ha!

I actually like it better facing left, like on the jersey.

It’s not good, it’s not bad… it’s just nothing. I keep trying to judge it as if it were an expansion team- in which case they should’ve made the sun/hoop a bit bolder.

It’s in the same ballpark as the Broncos logo- the zombie horse they currently have. Both logos will forever look like poor knockoffs of their originals.

Exactly Matt! I was about to point that out
the new logo is now on the official Dolphins web page.

      http://www.miamidolphins.com/

I am not a dolphins fan but I LOVED the old logo and of course their uniform, the color scheme and the old logo really represent the city of miami (at least in my mind) I am really hating on the idea that they will have now this “aquarium” logo :\

  • HJ

What’s going on in Florida? Jags, Marlins now Dolphins changing to inferior logoes. Will the Heat be next? Maybe they’ll change their logo to a literal interpreation of “heat”?

My problem with this logo is that it looks too basic. It’s looks like what the Dolphins logo was in 1930 or something. Also aren’t the Dolphins one of the marquee NFL franchises in terms of history? I feel like if you really think your franchise is one of the big teams you don’t change your logo. Look at the Yankees or LA Lakers or Raiders. Their logos are part of their history, I’m sad the Dolphins owner didn’t think enough of the old Dolphins logo to scrap it.

Maybe it was a bit cartoony but I felt the previous Dolphins logo was a classic. It’s a shame it’ll be gone though I bet it’ll be back in 10 years due to fan pressure.

  • JG

I don’t know HJ but I hope the Panthers change theirs hahaa the logo is hideous

It would have been funny if they decided to change it the last minute due to the leaks. Like leaked hip-hop albums.

  • ingmar66

Characterless downgrade of a former classic football logo. But the NFL and Nike know that toddlers and their moneybag parents will love this version in all its spineless cuteness, so expect a lot of merchandise to be sold in the 0-5 years old age bracket. And ofcourse a Disney spinoff cartoon series will follow on Disney XD: Finnie the Dolphin! Before you know it every daycare center in the country will have this logo as a huge mural. Move over, Dora!

The new logo is terrible. The Dolphins management does not know how to bring back fans to the stadium. They are totally lost and have no clue. They think by adding gimmicks like a night club in the stadium, having celebrity owners, having an orange glitz and glamor carpet, and changing the logo is going to bring fans back. I’m sorry, but it wont. Do you know what will? How about putting a good team on the field and see it that brings fans back. Another EPIC fail on the Dolphins part. It really surprises me that Ross is a billionaire. Nothing I have seen makes me think he is a success.

So far I like it, wish we could have a alternate dark blue uniform with team colors mixxed on it…love the all white helmet now with facemask, that’s tight…dolphin logo looks much better without helmet and style of sleek dolphin….and did not loose tradition!

  • marko

I give owner ross and gm ireland a lot of credit for offseason the teams having with nicer logo and uniforms and much better roster..
So we have not even hit the draft yet and I’m pumped to root hard for my phins no matter what!
