Pics: Four MLB clubs wear new unis yesterday

Written By:  •  Monday, April 8, 2013

Four teams wore new jerseys for the first time yesterday in Major League Baseball and at least one of them won’t be wearing them again this season.

The Milwaukee Brewers debuted their gold alternate jerseys in an extra-inning loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks; the gold jersey is the 4th different jersey the Brewers have worn in their last 4 games (is that a record?), you can see what the Brewers have worn throughout the season via our newest site feature (still kinda in BETA mode) here:

In San Francisco, the Giants received their 2012 World Series Champions rings and, as is the new tradition, wore gold-themed jerseys for the occasion.  The jersey was a home version of their 1980s inspired road alternate jersey with gold in place of orange throughout.  A cap was also worn with a gold “SF” and gold re-coloured 2012 World Series patch on the side:

After the success of last years throwback Sunday series, the Chicago White Sox are at it again, this time honouring the 30th anniversary of the 1983 AL West Champs by wearing the uniforms of that team.  Included: 1983 All-Star Game patch on sleeves, number on pants, helmets, and dugout jackets (well done Chicago!!)  Excluded: Elastic waistband on pants in favour of the belt:

Finally the Houston Astros raised some eyebrows when they unveiled their uniforms in November when an intro video claimed their new batting practice jerseys were “Sunday Home Alternates”.  We actually thought it was more likely to be an error in the video than reality; well, we were wrong, yesterday the Astros took on the Oakland A’s in their rainbow-side b.p. jerseys for a regular season game.  This has happened before in the big leagues, but it is quite rare:

Correct me if I’m wrong, weren’t the orange billed caps supposed to be the Astros’ road caps? Or that the orange jerseys and caps were supposed to be the Sunday home alternates? As for the other alternates, the Brewers gold third jerseys actually look decent. The Giants’ gold font doesn’t actually look bad on their home whites, however, they should consider emulating that jersey style on their black alternates, scrap the current orange uniforms, but wear orange caps with a black brim with those jerseys ala the Netherlands baseball team. The White Sox helmets didn’t match their home caps except the Sox script. Didn’t they wear all navy with red billed caps on the road?

The Giants should NEVER wear orange caps. However, I agree that the orange jerseys should be replaced by black jerseys, similar to those used in the early 2000′s. Or, at least change the lettering to the script style used on the late 70′s-early 80′s jerseys. The black and orange cap should also be paired with the orange jerseys, and not worn just on Sundays.

I agree that the orange drop shadow on the Giants’ championship jersey is unnecessary, just like the gold drop shadow is on their regular jerseys.

The Brewers gold jersey is the exact color I submitted for their Spring Training jersey design contest. I wonder if they already had that in mind, perhaps resulting in precluding my design entry (or others who submitted gold) as a finalist.

What if the Giants used their road alternate and made it their orange alternate kinda like the a’s yellow jersey? I think they should definitely do that, so that they 1) can wear them on Fridays home or road 2) get rid of having two gray road uniforms

SF Giants uni looks awesome !!!

    • geha714

Those SF uniforms are simply boss.

  • KDub

The Giants unis are very classy looking. Nice touch.

Love the Brew Crew golds. Now if they could bring back the Barrel Man logo full time.

I’m diggin’ the ’83 Pale Hose uniforms. So bad they are cool.

I actually wish the ‘Stros would have brought back a full rainbow alternate jersey. They would be selling like crazy.

Those Giants uniforms looked horrible when they were giving up nine in the 4th.

I lost interest in purchasing that Giants jersey when they lost that game. Don’t get me wrong,it looks nice, but you can’t lose that game.

This Giants would be perfect if they simply got rid of the orange drop shadow. Clutters up an otherwise very nice uniform.

I agree, those Giants unis actually look quite amazing. And, is it just me or is the player whose hand is modeling the WS ring missing half a finger? If he is, which player is it, cuz I Googled it with no result.

    • Chris Creamer

I have a feeling you still get fooled by that “removing my thumb” trick :) His index finger is just folded at the knuckle

I stand corrected. I thought I would hate the return of those White Sox unis from the 80′s, but I like them. Makes me expect Carlton Fisk or Harold Baines will come up to bat. Very cool. I like the ‘Stros jersies too, not too keen on the Brewers gold though. Keep the old m-b catcher mitt, pin stipe unis as an alternate.

Batting Practice Jerseys have no place in real games. Those Astros Uni’s are terrible!! What a Joke! The Giant jersey’s look great, but are pointless because that’s not their official colors. I agree with Aaron that the Giants should ditch their alt. orange jerseys. The Brewers jersey on it’s own is not too bad, but dislike the White Sox look.

Why in the world would the Astros utilize their BP jerseys as an alternate? Did the orange alternate jersey fail that badly in test sessions they rerouted course and decided to go with this jersey instead? Bad timing here and not a good idea at all to be sporting BP jerseys for a regular season game and the Astros wonders why they’re at the bottom of the barrel right now.

    • Aaron

That’s what I’m wondering. Maybe the Astros should use the navy alternates on the road. And BP jerseys should never be used during a regular season game.

  • Angel Barragan

I think the Giants should wear this as the road uni just make a gray version and the Milwaukee Brewers officially is the Oregon Ducks & Miami Heat of MLB!

  • RS

Astros fan. Yes it’s a lousy season. But on the question of the BP jersey. The road orange is still in effect. The real problem with the BP uni is that the numbers were pressed on and creased with bubbles – looked absolutely atrocious. I have no issue with the use of the BP jersey – it adds some life to otherwise rather plain unis home/away. But man, they need to take it all the way up and have the numbers be done professionally.

Generally speaking though, the uniform makeover has been great. People hysterically calling them ugly miss the point. The best years of the Astros included the rainbow era. It’s a vestige of the Dome. To completely skip it would have been sad.

    • Aaron

Oddly enough, some of the Astros best years came with their slightly futuristic navy and white gold and eventually their western inspired brick and sand motif.

Those are actually my favorite version of the Astros. Seemed to be more space themed.
