LA Galaxy Announce 1996-Inspired Alternate Jerseys, Retinas Offended

Written By:  •  Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Over a year ago, the MLS LA Galaxy started a Facebook campaign to solicit free design from their fans. This week, they showed the winner.

Using a colorset inspired by the original 1996 Galaxy uniforms, the new Adidas jersey will be paired with black shorts with 3 red Adidas stripes. The Galaxy badge is rendered in black and white, with a red Adidas logo.

The 1996 edition of the Galaxy got to show off their uniforms on the Jay Leno Show.

The jerseys will be worn August 17, against Real Salt Lake.

Are you a fan of the black, yellow, teal, and red kit? Will you buy it?

While I like the original Galaxy logo, my eyes just committed suicide after seeing this fail of epic proportion.

  • Some things should stay in the past.

  • Crazy colors, but pretty good execution.

Are they also bringing back the #WTF “spinning earthworm with eyes” logo from that same era? No? Well then, it can’t be that bad.

If only they didn’t use the orange, it would sort of remember the uniforms that the Galaxy used after the original trainwreck they had.

This looks like the team will rename to Saved By The Bell FC.

    Dear L.A. Galaxy,

Please, please, don’t try to start a 90s sports uniform revival.

It’s worth noting that LA’s rather-notable city flag is green, yellow, and red as well.

One word for these jerseys: UGLY!

Clever write-up. Interesting kit, to say the least.

One minor quibble: that 1996 appearance would have been on The Tonight Show. The Jay Leno Show was a short-lived prime time experiment that didn’t start until 2009.

This is why sports jerseys in the 90’s were one huge fashion fiasco. Let keep the past where it belongs: IN THE PAST!

  • Classy adaptation and relatively subtle homage to a (largely garish looking) history. Perhaps I’m biased as a “90’s kid,” but I love it.

  • SuperclassicMix

Oh, come on, people. This is far from the worst kit the Galaxy have worn. I like the blend of old and new here.

American soccer teams never get it right when it comes to logos and uniforms. Except for the national team.
