Islanders “NY” Logo Here to Stay, on Third Jersey for 2015

Fans of the new New York Islanders “NY” logo, which is appearing on their 2014 Stadium Series jerseys, will be happy to hear this bit of news.

The “NY” will be sticking around in one form or another and be featured on the new alternate uniforms. This is confirmed according to a series of Tweets from Chris Botta, the NHL biz writer for the SportsBusiness Journal as well as the New York Times (and the former PR guy for the Islanders) that’s a damn good resume, I’ll believe what he says:

That 2015 date coincides perfectly with the Islanders relocation from Uniondale to Brooklyn… the NY logo is also the only New York Islanders jersey logo to not feature Long Island on it.

Yes, while it’s true that Brooklyn, like Queens, is geographically located on Long Island, it is politically and culturally associated with New York City. The rest of the island, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, are what people usually refer to when mentioning Long Island.

The Islanders’ new “NY” logo features the “NY” from the classic circle logo used by the club off-and-on since their inaugural season of 1972-73. Like the primary logo, there are four orange lines in the style of hockey tape, near the blade of the stick — these four lines symbolize the four Stanley Cups the Islanders have won.

The outlines of the logo are silver and “chromified” as part of the NHL’s chrome logos program for the Stadium Series, it’s possible the chrome effects being removed are the changes Botta was referring to happening before the logo comes back for the alternate uniform… either that or they expect to add a fifth piece of tape.
