White Sox Retro ’83s Become Permanent Alternate Uniform

Chicago White Sox Alt Unis 2014

The Chicago White Sox are bringing back their 1983 retro uniforms from last season as a “permanent uniform” beginning in the 2014 season.

Basically what this means is the ’83 throwback worn in 2013 becomes a standard alternate jersey and is available out of the usual uniform rotation in the same way their black jerseys have been since 1991.

“The positive reaction from White Sox fans and team members was undeniable last season. We are proud to make the 1983 uniform a permanent part of the White Sox look and we are sure that the iconic ‘Winning Ugly’ jersey, along with the new retro-style ‘batterman’ cap, will be favorites for a new generation of Sox fans.” – Brooks Boyer, White Sox Sr. VP of Sales and Marketing

The new “retro-style batterman cap” Boyer refers to in the quote above is the “alternate BP cap the team unveiled earlier this month, the cap features the “batterman” part of the White Sox primary logo used from 1976-1990 but isn’t actually a cap the team wore at any point prior in their history. Call it a “fauxback”, if you will.

Chicago wore their retro ’83s for most Sunday home games during the 2013 season as part of celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of their AL West Division championship season. As was the case in 2013 the White Sox will wear the 1983 All-Star Game patch on their sleeve of this uniform. In 2013 the White Sox amassed a record of 9-6 while wearing the throwbacks, they went 28-38 wearing anything else at home.

Last season the White Sox wore the proper 1983 caps with the uniform, as stated earlier in the article for 2014 the team plans on wearing their new alternate BP “batterman” fauxback cap instead. This is the only change we’ve seen so far between last years look and this year.
