It’s not often you’ll see a team willing to relocate themselves to take part in a Turn Back the Clock game.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will do just that as they’ll be fantastic sports by wearing the uniforms of the 1914 Kansas City Packers of the long defunct Federal League. This to play along with the Chicago Cubs as they celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first game played at Wrigley Field on April 23rd… the Kansas City Royals will be playing in Cleveland that night, it seems like they would have been a more suitable opponent for the anniversary.
Back on April 23, 1914 the Kansas City Packers were the visiting team when the Chicago Federals opened the ballpark, then known as Weeghman Park. The Chicago Cubs didn’t move into the legendary stadium until 1916, the ballpark took the Wrigley Field name following the 1926 season.
We’re not yet sure what the Diamondbacks uniforms will look like for the game (see update at bottom of post, PICS!) but photographs from 1914 show a grey jersey with an interlocking “KC” logo on it, “Feds” is scripted inside the “C”. As is usually the case for road teams in a throwback game, the special uniforms for the Diamondbacks were recreated together by the Cubs and Majestic staff, not Arizona.
As previously announced, the Cubs will be wearing the Federals uniform for the game, a photo of their uniform below:
This will be the first of nine special throwback games to be held at Wrigley Field throughout the season, a full rundown of the games to come as well as photos of the jerseys which will be worn can be found here.
UPDATE (Apr 17/14 10:42am ET):
Courtesy a Tweet from Dbacks radio PHP guy Greg Schulte, we have a photograph of the actual uniform (see update below) the Diamondbacks will be wearing on Wednesday (special thanks to Twitter user @sroeland for the heads up). Here she is:
The Diamondbacks will be maintaining some sense of local branding by wearing their alternate black Dbacks cap, (see update below) a sleeve patch of their current primary logo. and a belt in Dbacks colours. It’s an odd mix of identities but a fair compromise.
UPDATE THE SECOND (Apr 19/14 10:41am ET):
The Arizona Diamondbacks contacted us to correct the information and image we shared above, the club will NOT be wearing Diamondbacks caps with what they’re calling the Kansas City “Federals” uniform. Here’s the official graphics:
As you can see, not only has the cap been changed but also the secondary colours (belt/socks), what was once Diamondbacks “Sedona” Red is now navy blue.
Here’s an updated photograph, also courtesy the team:
The Diamondbacks logo patch will remain on the sleeve.
