St. Petersburg Bowl Is Now Sponsored By Bitcoin

After Beef ‘O’ Brady’s ended their sponsorship of the St. Petersburg Bowl (which is held in Tropicana Field and played on that lovely green shag carpet), that left a spot open for a new sponsor to come in and give their money to the Bowl that normally features teams from the ACC and the American Athletic Conference.

That sponsor is BitPay, which is a payment processor that uses the digital currency known as Bitcoin. As such, the St. Petersburg Bowl will now be known as the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl from now until at least 2016, according to the Wall Street Journal’s report.

This isn’t the first time that digital currency has made its way into sports sponsorship, as the digital currency known as Dogecoin has been sponsoring Josh Wise’s car for a few races in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup.

The Bowl’s official twitter account tweeted the name change and the logo (from an account named @BitcoinBowl, which is what I’m pretty sure people will call it for short), which is the main reason why we’re bringing you this news:

As you can see, the logo (which was designed by Phoenix Design Works) incorporates the famous Sunshine Skyway Bridge that crosses the Tampa Bay and has bitcoin’s logo at the bottom as a football shoots from the logo and over the bridge. As simple as it is, there’s a lot more going on in this logo than in previous incarnations of the St. Petersburg Bowl’s logo.

For reference, here’s the logo from when it was known as the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl”

So, what do you think? Do you consider this an upgrade over the old logo under previous sponsorship?
