UNCW Seahawks Unveil New Logo

The Seahawks have a new logo.

No, not the team set to compete for their second straight Super Bowl victory this weekend, but rather the University of North Carolina – Wilmington Seahawks, who unveiled their new athletics logos at a student event earlier this week. The new logo replaces a dated look which had been in use by the school since Bush Sr. was in the White House.

“We sought a rebrand to come up with a logo that better reflected the attitude of UNCW Athletics.”, said Rob Aycock, the Seahawks Sr. Associate Athletic Director for External Operations in an email to SportsLogos.Net.  “We are a department that doesn’t back down to any competitor and wanted a logo that fit that identity.”

New Primary mark for UNCW

Designed by Joe Bosack & Co., the new mark has some fun with negative space creating a seahawk head out of a blue and green triangle, the top of the seahawk head forming a white “W”, a nod to Wilmington, NC.

Working with Joe was amazing and I’d highly recommend him to anyone who’s considering a logo change. We provided Joe some input in terms of colours and what we wanted to achieve, but deliberately gave him license to be as creative as possible. We wanted to do something daring and he delivered that. – Rob Aycock

We can concur with Rob’s statements, Bosack rarely disappoints with his designs.

The logo was unveiled over the course of the past month via a puzzle with pieces spread out throughout the campus and via the school’s various social media channels.

Surprisingly the previous primary logo, which as alluded to earlier had been in use since 1992, is being retained, it is now classified as a secondary mark.

“We chose to keep the previous logo as a secondary mark because it is in so many permanent campus locations.”, Aycock explained, “It will also continue to be used extensively by the University community. It’s a great piece of art, but we wanted to go in a different direction with our athletic logo.”

But most importantly in any rebranding process is how are the local fans or students are responding to the change.

“Reaction since the launch has been overwhelmingly positive. There has been great demand for merchandise for the new logo and in particular, our student-athletes are anxious to wear the new logo in competition.”

Most users of SportsLogos.Net agree, rating the new primary mark an 8 out of 10 at the time of this post.
