Things really are starting to look like the glory days once again for the Toronto Blue Jays.
The team announced this afternoon that they will be breaking out a white-panel cap again for just one game (at least, for now) this Sunday when they take on the New York Yankees. Caps will feature the modern (2012-15) Toronto Blue Jays cap logo on the old 1977-93 white-front-panel cap template. Not a true throwback but a modern take on the old look.
The caps will be worn as part of the teams’ “Turn Back the Dial” promotion where they will be honouring the 30th anniversary of the 1985 AL East Division championship team. The ’85 Jays battled with the New York Yankees for the division crown before taking on the Kansas City Royals in the playoffs. Not that history ever repeats itself or anything.
Based on the reception the caps are getting thus far on Twitter the team would be foolish not to bring these retro beautys back as a regular alternate. Personally, I’d like to see them every Sunday home game.
The Blue Jays wore a white-panel cap for every game, home and road, from their expansion season in 1977 up through 1988. In 1989 the cap was worn only at home until midway through the 1993 season when a home losing streak had them deemed “unlucky” and they were thrown away for good, replaced by an all-blue version. They made a return for a few seasons in the late 2000s as part of an alternate throwback uniform.
