“Forty years of orange and blue? Who cares… Brooklyn! WooHoo!” – New York Islanders, essentially.
The New York Islanders have unveiled their new alternate uniform to be used during their first season playing out of the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY. The uniform is black and white, no trace of blue visible when worn in-game (inside back collar only) and practically invisible hints of orange.
“It was extremely important to ensure that our passionate fan base could still see the traditions of the New York Islanders represented in this third jersey. We feel we’ve created a jersey our players will be proud to wear that has unique features which will also connect with Brooklyn residents.” – Islanders General Manager Garth Snow
Oh the traditions of the Islanders are visible throughout this jersey alright. It’s a new uniform which mostly everyone hates, what could be more Islanders than that?
“The colours of black and white infuse the spirit of Brooklyn into the borough’s new home team, while the four stripes seen throughout the uniform pay homage to the Islanders famed Stanley Cup dynasty.” – Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark
Ah, the four stripes, for the Isles’ four Cup wins from 1980 through 1983, they’re actually all over the place on this uniform. Down each arm are four white stripes (reunion?!), they’re very thin presumably because there’s so many… but multiple thick stripes can look great too, Islanders captain John Tavares wore five thick stripes for several years with the Oshawa Generals, that was a good look! The four stripes also appear on the socks, the hockey stick of the “NY” logo, on the “Y” of the “BKLYN” helmet decal, and through a small “B” on either side of jersey near the waist.
There are two patches to be worn on the jersey, one a memorial for former team coach during each of those four stripes Al Arbour which simply reads “AL” in black on white circle. The other a patch in recognition of the Isles’ inaugural season in Brooklyn in case the uniform wasn’t enough (fun story, that patch isn’t black-and-white at all):
As mentioned earlier, the helmets will have “BKLYN” on either side with four orange stripes on the “Y”:
At the waist will be two little tabs (one on each side) with a new “B” logo featuring four orange stripes:
The Islanders will wear their new black-and-white alternate uniforms twelve times throughout the upcoming 2015-16 season, all of which will be played at home. The full schedule of those games below:
