Fifty Years of Super Bowl Logos

With the 2015 NFL Playoffs getting underway this weekend it’s a fitting time we take a look back at the past half-century of Super Bowl logos.

The 50th annual Super Bowl game will be played less than one month from today, it is the first time the league has used Arabic numerals (officially calling it “Super Bowl 50” rather than “Super Bowl L”) instead of Roman for the big game. Fear not fans of numeric tradition, they’ll go back to Roman numerals for next year’s Super Bowl LI.

Logos for the Super Bowl started off as no more than the name of the game presented in various fonts and colours, it wasn’t until Super Bowl XII or XIII that the designs started expanding upon this concept, you could say the first real “logo” logo for the Super Bowl was XIX. Each installment of the Super Bowl saw an entirely new logo designed for it up through Super Bowl XLIV, the league then implemented a template for the game beginning with XLV which they’ve been using ever since, this year will be the sixth year of this style (but the first with colour!)
