Asheville Tourists proclaim their town Beer City

There are a lot of places in North America that could lay claim to the title “Beer City,” but only one of them took the initiative to put the slogan on their baseball team’s uniforms. The Asheville Tourists will change their name for one night to the Beer City Tourists, opening the nationwide debate about which is America’s best beer city. (Clearing my throat as I write this in my hometown of Fort Collins, Colorado.)

The Tourists will play as the Beer City Tourists for their June 2 game against the Greenville Drive. They’ll wear jerseys with “Beer City” in a custom typeface designed by Brandiose, as well as caps featuring their Asheville A in a pint glass. The jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit the Asheville Tourists Children’s Fund, which provides shoes to needy children in western North Carolina.

“The craft beer industry has generated an economic boom in this community,” said Tourists president Brian DeWine, who definitely needs to change his name, on MiLB.com. “This one of a kind night will pay tribute to the local craft beer industry while also benefitting the Asheville Tourists Children’s Fund.”

The Tourists play in Buncombe County, which is home to 24 craft breweries. (Asheville is also home to a facility operated by New Belgium Brewery, which is famous for its signature Fat Tire beer, and whose primary facility and headquarters can be found in a certain northern Colorado city in Larimer County, which is home to 32 breweries.)

The Tourists, Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies (who play about an hour south of Fort Collins), are selling the pint glass caps and “Beer City Tourists” T-shirts through their online store.
