Red Wings Announce Gordie Howe Memorial Patch

The Detroit Red Wings announced they would be honouring the life of all-time hockey legend Gordie Howe by way of a memorial patch on their jerseys.

Showing Gordie’s famous number 9 in white on a red square, the patch will be worn on both their home and road sweaters on the upper left side throughout the upcoming 2016-17 season. The Red Wings will also be wearing a patch noting their final season at Joe Louis Arena, this will be worn on the shoulder.

Detroit Red Wings Gordie Howe Memorial Patch 2016-2017

Gordie Howe played 25 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings from 1946-1971, he retired briefly before making a comeback to play with his two sons in the World Hockey Association. Howe’s number was retired by the Red Wings in 1972 and he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame later that same year. At the time of his retirement he was the NHL’s all-time leader in goals, assists, and points.

Gordie died on June 10, 2016 at the age of 88 in Ohio.
