It’s the 70th anniversary of the first season of what is now known as the National Basketball Association, the first game of that that first season was played in Toronto between the New York Knicks and the long defunct Toronto Huskies.
The Raptors, Toronto’s modern-day NBA franchise, has acknowledged the Huskies several times during their existence. Twenty years ago, during the NBA’s 50th anniversary season, the Raptors donned Huskies throwback uniforms a number of times including for a game against the Knicks fifty years to the day of that first game. Huskies throwbacks were worn a handful of times again in 2010, and just two months ago it was announced the team would be wearing a blue version of that uniform in 2016-17.
Now it appears the tributes to the Huskies will be going that much further, a photo uploaded to Twitter by the suspiciously quiet @javrab shows what appears to be players practicing on a Toronto Huskies themed court laid down on the floor of the Air Canada Centre. @Javrab later Tweeted that this photo was taken two weeks ago during a team practice.
Take a look:
We can’t confirm at this time whether this is a legit photograph or one heckuva Photoshop job, unfortunately we haven’t gotten a look yet inside the arena to see for ourselves. Either way, it looks sweet, and we sure hope it’s for reals.
The Raptors kick off their regular season schedule on Wednesday when they host the Detroit Pistons, perhaps in Huskies throwbacks.
