The Lansing Lugnuts, Single-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, are letting fans pick a temporary nickname Choose Your Own Adventure-style for a game later this season. The Lugnuts, one of the trailblazers in the era of Minor League Baseball’s wacky nicknames, have provided lists of 10 adjectives and 10 nouns, offering 100 possible nickname outcomes such as Mighty Melonheads, Super-Duper Wombats, and White Monsters. (Note: This is basically how most Minor League Baseball chose nicknames until the 1990s anyway.)
The Red Socks, Green Giants, or Junior All Stars (or whatever) will take the field for one game August 18 against the Fort Wayne TinCaps for Backyard Baseball Night. Fans (and others) can vote here (as I have done twice).
Paul Caputo is a grown man who collects plastic ice cream helmet sundaes from minor league baseball stadiums because he likes logos that much. He is the author of the first book published by SportsLogos.net, The Story Behind the Nickname: The Origins of 100 Classic, Contemporary, and Wacky Minor League Baseball Team Names. He can be found on Twitter at @Count2Baseball and he maintains the Countdown to Spring Training on Facebook. Paul is a Philadelphia sports fan, but he's not so bad.
