New SPHL Team Changes Logo Before Playing a Game

Before even playing their first game, the Quad City Storm of the Southern Professional Hockey League have announced a logo change.

Replacing the void left by the recently departed Quad City Mallards of the ECHL, the Storm announced they’d be joining the SPHL for the 2018-19 season as the re-activated Louisiana IceGators franchise which had stopped playing in 2016. Unable to use the Mallards identity due to the ECHL retaining the trademark, the team opted for a new name and announced “Storm” as that name less than a month ago.

I spoke with team president Gwen Tombergs who told me the team had always planned on changing the original logo, feeling they needed a visual identity to use while they were still working on finalizing their actual logo.

The Storm will play their first-ever home game on October 20th at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Illinois.
