Newfoundland Growlers Unveil Uniforms for Inaugural Season

The Newfoundland Growlers have unveiled their sleek black and gold uniforms for their inaugural campaign in the ECHL. Affiliated with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, the Growlers have opted for a look that’s all their own, a complete 180° turn from the previous St. John’s-based team to work with the Leafs.

The star of both jerseys is the Growlers primary logo, a Newfoundland dog which the team describes as “a large working dog who is known for their size, strength, intelligence and loyalty … is fierce and stoic to represent the pride and resilience of our province”. The dog comes with an arched “NEWFOUNDLAND” wordmark, similar to the Vancouver Canucks uniforms, but only on the black jersey.

Each jersey has thick striping at the waist – black and gold on the whites, white and gold on the blacks; this same colour pattern is carried over to the sleeves but the thickness is adjusted with the top stripe very thin and positioned just below the elbow with the bottom band carrying right on to the cuff.

On the shoulders, we see a commemorative inaugural season logo. This logo is worn on both shoulders of both jerseys featuring the same design: a stylized “G” within a compass, the northeast section of the compass highlighted to note Newfoundland’s position in the very northeastern part of North America (if you thought Maine was in the northeast, take a look at where the island of Newfoundland is on a map). The words “INAUGURAL SEASON 2018/19” are included in this patch along with the full team name, this patch will remain on the uniform for future seasons with the “INAUGURAL SEASON” bit removed.

As is the policy in the ECHL, the Growlers will wear their black jersey at home for the first half of the season before switching to white at home during the second half.

The Newfoundland Growlers will play their first-ever game on October 12th when they host the Florida Everblades at the Mile One Centre in St. John’s, NL.
