Complete List of MLB Players Weekend Nicknames, Caps, Jerseys for 2018

Everything you wanted to know about MLB’s Players Weekend uniforms, caps, jerseys, socks, and nicknames all here for you in one convenient package!

Yes, Major League Baseball’s Players Weekend is back again for 2018 and just like last season, the league is allowing teams and players to have a little more fun with what they wear when they take the field for all games across MLB starting today Friday, August 24th and continuing through Saturday and Sunday. Players Weekend was introduced in 2017, dressing teams up in colourful uniforms with player names replaced with nicknames or whatever a player wanted.

Like a rainbow across the entire league, jerseys and caps are (for the most part) bold, vivid solid colours; no team is wearing white or pinstripes although several are wearing grey versions in cases where their preferred main colour would look too similar to the home team. Sleeves are always a separate colour from the base and caps do the same between the visor and crown. The overall idea of the uniform design is that they’re meant to emulate the general look of what a Little League Baseball player would wear.

Other than the two Bay Area clubs, Oakland and San Francisco all of the caps are different from what was worn for the event last season. Visor colours are now different from the crown across the league with cap logos re-coloured to use just the colours chosen for the crown and visor. Milwaukee and Philadelphia are both using a different cap logo than last year, the other 28 teams going with the same logo.

As for the jerseys, one-half of the league is wearing the exact same jersey design as last year, the other half going either with a new design or re-coloured from 2017. Those teams with new jerseys are Baltimore, the Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Colorado, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco, St Louis, and Washington.

“We wanted to reach out in the direction of youth, and really allow the players to show their personalities”, Noah Garden, MLB’s Executive Vice President, Business told SportsLogos.Net last August. “As you start to reminisce about playing when you’re a kid, there are different colours, my son played t-ball on the Orioles, he loved the bright colour of that uniform.”

We got a preview of how these uniforms will look on the field this season during the Little League Classic last weekend when the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies both wore them, and then again on yesterday afternoon as the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox broke them out a day early:

You may have noticed that sleeve patch in the photo above, it’s what the league is called the “evolution” patch and it shows the journey a player makes from Little League to the big leagues; we start with the batter featured in the Little League logo and watch him grow to the batter used in the Major League logo.

“Our idea here is we start from the Little League logo, then watch the progression, the stances based on a child and their progression during those periods,” Anne Occi, MLB Vice President of Design Services told SportsLogos.Net.

The league insists none of the silhouettes used are of any player in particular but that’s clearly (sigh) Mets slugger José “Joey Bats” Bautista in the second-to-last image.

“What we did was we took into account different stances and obviously our batter, to make him full-bodied,” Occi explained. “It doesn’t flow quite as well because it’s usually truncated but it still gives you a nice stance and it still gets you from ‘Point A’ to ‘Point B’”.

That evolution logo appears in three places on the uniform, two of which are the usual spots you’d normally find the Major League Baseball logo — back of the cap, back of the jersey above the player name; the third in the form of a special “THANK YOU” patch on the sleeve with a blank space to allow players to write-in the name of someone important to their development as a baseball player.

Players will be writing the name of someone they wish to thank in the white space on this sleeve patch

There’s also a special sock design being offered to players, which some opted to wear Thursday in the White Sox-Tigers game, although many just wore their usual team sock design:

The fun doesn’t stop with the uniforms, bats, cleats, wrist guards are all fair game for unique, colourful designs this weekend across the league.

Of course, the most talked about feature of the entire weekend are the nicknames players get to wear on the back of the jerseys in place of their usual last name, here’s Philadelphia’s Wilson Ramos wearing “BUFFALO” and Detroit’s Matt Boyd with “MATTY B” from the two Players Weekend uniform games already played earlier this month:

Here’s a list of what each player is wearing as their nickname as of August 8th, the list was provided by Major League Baseball, things may have changed in the two weeks since it was originally provided — please feel free to share corrections in the comments.

Where I could find it I included the reason for each nickname but from this list, most players just went with a variation of their last or first names; 45 players felt their last name was good enough, while 1 San Francisco Giants player literally used “LAST NAME” (he’s kind of a hero, really). Two players use their Korean last names, and since it’s 2018, of course, there’s at least one “emoji” jersey.
