Calgary Flames Unveil Retro Alternate Uniform

It’s another blast back to the past for the Calgary Flames, as the team this morning unveiled their new third uniform for the 2018-19 season.

A throwback to the road red uniform the team first wore as they moved north from Georgia in 1980, Calgary had originally worn this uniform for their first decade-and-a-half, including for two trips to the Stanley Cup Final and a championship thirty years ago this season in 1989. The design has, of course, been updated to fit on the Adidas Adizero jersey style.

It’s that Stanley Cup anniversary that’s being cited as the reason for the return of this classic uniform, the Flames were wearing these road reds in Montreal as they hoisted the Cup for that first and only time in franchise history; in fact, it’s the only time a visiting club ever won the Stanley Cup at the Montreal Forum.

Like the 1980-94 design, this uniform is red with white and gold striping at the waist and on each sleeve; on the chest is the Flames familiar flaming-C logo in white with gold trim. The Flames had previously brought this uniform back as a “throwback” for their 30th anniversary season in 2009-10 before making it their official alternate uniform for 2010-11 through 2012-13, the uniform was brought back a second time as an alternate uniform for the 2016-17 season.

For the uniform nerds, this uniform is officially classified as an alternate or “third uniform” rather than a throwback/retro/classic. The designation means the team wears it a dozen times per season and needs to keep it around for a few years before they can replace it.

Here’s the complete list of games in which the Flames will wear their new alternate uniforms:

Saturday, October 6, 2018 vs. Vancouver Canucks
Wednesday, October, 2018 vs. Boston Bruins
Saturday, November 3, 2018 vs. Chicago Blackhawks
Thursday, November 15, 2018 vs. Montreal Canadiens
Saturday, November 17, 2018 vs. Edmonton Oilers
Saturday, December 22, 2018 vs. St. Louis Blues
Saturday, December 29, 2018 vs. Vancouver Canucks
Friday, January 18, 2019 vs. Detroit Red Wings
Wednesday, February 20, 2019 vs. New York Islanders
Monday, March 4, 2019 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
Friday, March 15, 2019 vs. New York Rangers
Saturday, April 6, 2019 vs. Edmonton Oilers

Very muchly looking forward to that game on November 15th against the Canadiens, seeing those two uniforms up against each other stirs up a lot of memories for those of us who were introduced to the game in the 1980s… shame about the Oilers darker blue, otherwise that’d be another set.
