New York Jets Take Flight, Unveil New Logo and Uniforms for 2019

A lighter green returns, joined by black as the New York Jets unveiled their new logo and uniforms at Gotham Hall in Midtown Manhattan.

Three new uniforms were unveiled by the team tonight at a media event hosted by actor-comedian J.B. Smoove. The usuals, green at home, white on the road, and now an all-black alternate uniform matching and confirming the various leaks we had seen trickle out over the course of this past week.

The new look combines elements from the two different uniform styles used by the club over the past 50 years. The helmet, for example, uses a green shell as it did for twenty years in the 70s-80s-90s with a black facemask but the logo is more similar to (but a stripped down version of) what was used in the late 1960s and again here in 2000s.

The colours officially referred to as “Gotham Green”, “Spotlight White’, and “Stealth Black”

While the logo looks similar to what the Jets had been using since 1998, there are some differences. The “JETS” wordmark is now all the same size throughout (previously the “J” was slightly larger), the “NY” behind the wordmark has been eliminated and replaced with “NEW YORK” spelt out above the team name. The football at the bottom of the logo has also been updated.

“Our new uniforms are built to perform on the world’s biggest stage and are inspired by the toughness, grit, and resilience of the New York City area”, Jets team president Neil Glatt said at the unveiling. “They are designed to be both modern and innovative, and representative of our aspirations both on and off the field”.

“Our new colours – Gotham Green, Spotlight White, and Stealth Black are clean, bold, and dynamic”, Glatt continued. “Our goal with all this, as defined by our ownership, was to help to create an indisputable home-field advantage”.

Across the front of each jersey is “NEW YORK”, the Jets join the Cleveland Browns (at least for one season) to have their city name across the front of their uniform. Contrasting stripes are on each shoulder (white on the green, green on the white as well as on the black), this design is duplicated down each pant leg.

“I like them, love the helmet, the 80s (style) logo, the green, I’m definitely buying the black jersey”, Jets superfan Scott Mallery said. “They killed the helmet, that helmet is awesome.”

It’s the first significant uniform or logo change to the Jets in twenty-one years when the club unveiled their throwback-style design in 1998.
