New York Jets Go Throwback Uniforms Full-Time, Unveil New Green, Black Versions

The New York Jets on Monday morning officially promoted their “Legacy” throwback uniforms to full-time road status and unveiled corresponding green home and black alternate uniforms.

The Jets originally wore the green and white versions of this uniform from 1978-89, complete with solid numbers, two contrasting stripes on the sleeves and a contrasting collar, as well as white pants with a single green stripe down the sides and solid green socks.

The road version returned for two games last season, with New York swapping the black facemasks and logo on its standard Gotham green helmets for a white facemask and retro “JETS” logo, which is italicized and features a jet extending from the “J.” It is now the team’s primary mark again, though it has been slightly modified with a bolder font, tighter spacing and a refined pointed nose of the plane.

“We work for the fans,” chairman Woody Johnson said in the press release. “They have consistently asked for us to return to our roots and we heard them. The new uniforms are explicitly designed to look and feel like the New York Jets while refreshing the club’s iconic logo – viewed by fans as our most identifiable mark.”

Of course, the Jets didn’t wear a black jersey until they introduced their most recent set in 2019, so the new black alternate follows the same template as the other versions but includes white numbers outlined in green, green stripes on the sleeves and a green collar.

The jersey will be paired with New York’s black alternate helmet that was added to the rotation in 2022, which now includes the new primary mark in green and outlined in white, as well as black pants with a single green stripe down the sides.

One last difference between the set the Jets originally wore from 1978-89 and the uniforms they unveiled today is the addition of green pants, which have a solid white stripe down the sides, as the franchise only had green pants as an option from 1990-96 and 2002-23.

“Recreating our uniforms, as well as developing a modernized look for the organization signifies our commitment to progress, remaining innovative, and delivering excellence to our players and fans,” team president Hymie Elhai said in the release.

“Elevating the New York Jets identity with a refreshed uniform embodies the unity and a timeless sense of the Sack Exchange era while empowering every player and generations of fans to stand out and stay true to our team’s heritage.”

Interestingly, Monday’s unveiling fell on the 61st anniversary of the New York Titans changing their name to the Jets. Still, the franchise did not use that as an opportunity to unveil an additional alternate or throwback design.

New York was presented with the option of adding a third helmet to the rotation as one of four teams unveiling new uniforms this offseason – while the rest of the league must wait until 2025 after the NFL revised its policy last week – but chose not to do so.
