The West Virginia football program unveiled new home, road and alternate uniforms this offseason – including one that honors the state’s coal mining history – but the one thing still missing from the rotation is a throwback set.

The Mountaineers have never actually worn throwback uniforms, though they notably added 1970s-inspired decals to their white alternate helmets for at least one game during 2013-16 and 2018 seasons.

However, if a recent exchange on social media between athletic director Wren Baker, head coach Neal Brown and a fan is any indication, a throwback to the 1965 team might be in the works for 2025.

The fan was reacting the New York Giants’ new “Century Red” throwback uniforms when he posted a photo of the Mountaineers’ 1965 helmets, which include a metallic gold base, a light blue state outline and stacked “WVU.”

Baker quoted the fan’s post, adding that he is a “massive” fan of the 1965 helmet and noting that 2025 will mark the 60th anniversary of that team, which captured its second straight Southern Conference championship that fall.

Brown then replied with eyeball emojis, an encouraging sign for those hoping the throwback uniforms come to fruition next season. Perhaps they’ll be worn on Sept. 13, 2025, against Pitt, who West Virginia beat, 63-48, in 1965.
