BYU Cougars Unveil Retro-Inspired Alternate Uniforms

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of college football’s first game, BYU announced it will wear retro-inspired uniforms for this weekend’s game against No. 22 Washington (3:30 p.m. ET on ABC/ESPN2).

The jerseys follow the same design template as the Cougars’ standard road uniform, but swaps navy for royal blue on the numbers and sleeve stripes. It is effectively the road version of BYU’s royal blue alternates, which returned in 2009 to honor the 25th anniversary of the program’s lone national title and has since become a regular part of the uniform rotation.

The pants are royal blue with white stripes, while the socks feature vintage royal blue stripes that mimic what the Cougars wore in the 1970s under legendary coach LaVell Edwards.

The throwback threads are complete with a white helmet that features the original Block “Y” logo, used by the Cougars in the 1960s. The gray facemask and single royal blue stripe down the center pays tribute to Marion Probert (1952-54), whose No. 81 is one of just nine numbers to be retired by the BYU football program.

The field at LaVell Edwards Stadium will also be repainted this weekend to include a diamond-shaped pattern in the end zones and the throwback helmet logo at midfield.
