The Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars will acknowledge Remembrance Sunday during their game in London, England on November 9.
According to The Daily Mail both clubs will wear a poppy decal on both their jerseys and helmets for the game at Wembley on the British holiday. Remembrance Sunday commemorates the contribution of British and Commonwealth military servicemen both still in service and throughout history.
Poppies have been worn by British and Canadian citizens every November as a public sign of respect for those who have fought and/or died for their country, it’s origins trace back to the poem “In Flanders Fields”, written by Canadian World War I soldier John McCrae in 1915 which makes note of the poppies which are seen throughout the military cemeteries. McCrae later ended up getting ill while serving during the war and died in 1918.
Unlike the United States, British based sports teams do not usually wear on-field patches or decals commemorating holidays or in honour of the military, UK Premier League clubs did eventually wear poppy patches on their jerseys for the first time for Remembrance Sunday in 2013.
