Crew Appear Set to add S.C. to Name This Fall

Columbus Crew Logo

The Columbus Crew have been hyping up a new rebrand for almost a year, and now with just over a month until the big day we’re starting to get an idea of what’s to come.

Thanks to some A-Level snooping by “Massive Scoop”, a Columbus Crew fan blog, we’ve learned that the team has registered at least three new website addresses incorporating the name “Columbus Crew S.C.”; “S.C.” is an acronym for “Soccer Club”

The domain ColumbusCrewSC.us was registered this past July 1st by Crew Front Office employee Arica Kress, on that very same day ColumbusCrewSC.com and ColumbusCrewSC.org were both registered using DomainsByProxy, a service which hides domain owner information.

Earlier this week we got a preview of what the new logo could look like from Adam Jardy of The Columbus Dispatch:

The new logo is expected to incorporate the Columbus skyline as well as the number 96. It will likely be circular as well. The colours and name will remain the same, but say goodbye to the three construction workers.”

If the team is indeed changing their name to Columbus Crew S.C. they will be second MLS club in 2015 to start using “SC” at the end of their name, Orlando City S.C. – an expansion team for next season – will also be using the initials.

Initials at the end of a name are nothing new for teams in the league, other clubs such as FC Dallas, Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and Seattle Sounders FC have all been using them for several seasons; Miami Fusion FC was the first in the league to add them, doing so from 1998 through 2001. New York City FC, another new expansion club for 2015, will also use the acronym.

The Columbus Crew will unveil their new logos (and name?) on October 8th at 6:30pm.
