Mariners to Wear Ken Griffey Jr Patches In-Game

Griffey Patch 1

According to a Tweet from ESPN’s Darren Rovell earlier today, the Seattle Mariners will be wearing a patch celebrating Ken Griffey, Jr. early next month.

During the Mariners weekend August series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Aug 5-7), the Mariners will wear a patch commemorating the team retiring Griffey’s jersey number 24. “The Kid”, who spent a decade with the Mariners in the late 1980s through to the end of the 1990s (and then again for a farewell cup of coffee in the late 2000s), will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown later this week.

The patch shows Griffey (no, not with a backwards cap) in his familiar pose post-swing, his name and number visible on the back of his jersey, and the Seattle skyline behind him.

The Tweet from Rovell:

The image shows two different patches, one in the Mariners modern navy and teal and the other in the retro royal blue and yellow. The Mariners wear their retro colours on Sunday games, so looks like a patch was made specifically for that colour scheme.

It’s worth noting that Griffey wore both colour schemes during his time with Seattle.
