Phillies Add Patch for Montgomery

The Philadelphia Phillies have added a memorial patch to their jersey sleeve in memory of team president and minority owner David Montgomery who died last week at the age of 72. The patch will remain on the jersey sleeve for the rest of the 2019 season.

Montgomery, a Philadelphia native, had been with the Phillies since 1971 where he started as a member of their sales department. Through the next several seasons he worked his way up into running the business department by 1980. Montgomery purchased the Phillies along with Bill Giles in 1981, he was named President of the club in 1997.

The memorial patch, worn on the Phillies’ right sleeve above the MLB150 patch, shows Montgomery’s initials “DPM” in white on a black circle. It was added to the uniform for Philadelphia’s first home date following his death, the May 13th game against Milwaukee.

Philadelphia has worn several memorial patches in recent seasons, typically the team wears their memorials on the front-left of the jersey (over the heart), such as for broadcaster Harry Kalas in 2009 and part-owner Claire Betz in 2014.
