10 European Football Clubs — Including 5 from England — Unveil New Kits for 21-22

A whole slew of European club football kits dropped right before the weekend, include five clubs from England, two each from Italy and France, and one from Germany. Let’s take a closer look …

MANCHESTER UNITED – Away

Premier League powerhouses Manchester United have taken a new angle with their away kits for 2021-22. The shirt is predominantly the same shade of off-white (“Cloud White,” per adidas) as United used as an accent colour on their home kits. It is covered in rough blue diagonal lines that vary in width to create an overall zigzag pattern. The crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are off-white, while the adidas logo, sponsor logos and adidas shoulder stripes are all red. The club crest is rendered in red and white.

NEWCASTLE UNITED – Away

Premier League side Newcastle United are making waves with their 2021-22 away kit, made by Castore. The kit features black and grey horizontal stripes, which are warped in various places. Each underarm has a black panel; the area of the sleeve cuff that touches each panel is gold. The collar is mostly white with gold trim, except at the front, where there’s a gold chevron. The sponsor and manufacturer logos are gold, and the club crest is monochromatic gold.

ASTON VILLA – Away

Premier League side Aston Villa’s 2021-22 away kit, made by Kappa, marks the 40th anniversary of the club’s European Cup win in May 1982 over Bayern Munich. The white shirt with claret pinstripes mimics the away kit worn by that 1981-82 squad. Light blue trim can be found on the sleeve cuffs and inside the collar. Claret panels run under each arm. The collar is claret and white, while the club crest is monochromatic claret.

NORWICH CITY – Away

Newly promoted Premier League side Norwich City carry forward the canary wing pattern on the sleeves of their home kit to their away kit for 2021-22, made by Joma. The shirt itself is predominantly black, with the sleeve pattern rendered in turquoise along with the sponsor logo, manufacturer logo and monochrome club crest. The V-neck collar is turquoise with black trim.

LEEDS UNITED – Away

Premier League side Leeds united have opted for a predominantly blue away kit for 2021-22. The shirt features a tonal camouflage pattern similar to that manufacturer adidas has used for other clubs this year, such as Leicester City, Olympique Lyonnais and Union Berlin. The crew neck collar is solid blue while all sponsor and manufacturer logos, including the adidas shoulder stripes, are white. The club crest is rendered in blue and white. From photos we’ve seen so far, it appears, Leeds’s other signature colour, yellow, does not feature anywhere on this kit.

US SASSUOLO – Home

Normally clad in green and black stripes at home, Italian Serie A side US Sassuolo and manufacturer Puma have put a slight twist on that motif for 2021-22. The front of their kit features broad green stripes and narrower black stripes; in between are alternating green and black angled lines. The raglan sleeves are solid black, while the V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs are green. The sponsor logo is white, as are the Puma logos on the chest and shoulders.

VENEZIA FC – Away

After releasing their home kit on July 29, Italian Serie A side Venezia FC followed up quickly with their 2021-22 away kit, manufactured by Kappa, on July 30. The shirt has an off-white base, with a pattern of triangles and a horizontal bar on the front that fade from orange to black to green. The chest bar contains a gold “VENEZIA” wordmark instead of a sponsor. The right sleeve fades from orange to off-white, while the left sleeve fades from green to off-white. The sleeve cuffs are partially trimmed with black, while the crew neck collar is solid black. Kappa logos on the sleeve chest appear in black.

FC METZ – Home, Away & Third

Meanwhile, French Ligue 1 side FC Metz may have outdone Venezia in terms of wild design for this round of unveilings. Their home shirt is predominantly maroon, a traditional club colour, but the front features abstract dot patterns, both in tonal variations of maroon and in orange. Orange is also used as an accent colour on the collar and sleeve cuff trim. The back and sleeves are solid maroon, though the back is the slightly lighter shade seen on parts of the front. Sponsor, manufacturer and team logos appear in white.

These kits are the first to feature FC Metz’s new crest, which they unveiled back in May. The crest features a stylized Cross of Lorraine, which appears without the wordmark on the 2021-22 kits.

Metz’s away kit is predominantly black, again with abstract tonal dot patterns. Maroon takes over from orange as the accent colour, appearing sparingly on the collar, sleeve cuffs and front of the shirt. Logos again appear in white.

Metz’s third jersey flips the script on the away kit, with white as the predominant colour. Once again, the abstract tonal dot patterns dominate the front of the shirt, with slivers of orange thrown in. The collar is maroon and orange, as is the trim on each sleeve cuff. The sponsor logos, Kappa logos, and club crest are maroon.

FC NANTES – Away

Another Ligue 1 side, FC Nantes, has kept things decidely simpler for their 2021-22 away kit, made by Macron. The solid white shirt is accented by a dark green V-neck collar, back hem and sleeve cuffs, all with metallic gold trim. Macron logos and the club crest appear in dark green, while the sponsor logo on the chest is metallic gold.

MAINZ 05 – Away

There’s more to the away kit for German Bundesliga side Mainz 05 than meets the eye. The predominantly white shirt has a red crew neck collar with a white insert at the front, and red Kappa logos on the chest and sleeves. The front of the jersey features the Wheel of Mainz, which has been part of the city’s coat of arms for hundreds of years, and also appears on the city flag. If you look closely, you’ll see that the wheel symbol is comprised of a tonal pattern that matches the one on the front of the club’s home kit, released earlier this month.
