I used to work for a sports team, and with one of the companies that did shirts for Nike. The owner told me about how all the “phantom” gear gets donated to third world countries. At the time of the conversation, they were printing Super Bowl shirts. Unlike some of the comments before mine, I’m referring to a U.S. shop, so if was all done in the states. I assume there are other situations similar to this (I’ve also had to work with companies overseas, and logistically it make more sense to have this type of merch produced stateside due to the fact you don’t know who is going to be in it much in advance, so either that or airfreight everything) in which you have U.S companies (leagues or Nike) paying U.S. companies (like the shop mentioned) for both the winning and losing shirts. By donating the shirts, they at least get used so there is little waste. Until we wear holographic shirts that can have new artwork uploaded instantly (and likely for a fee), this is the most logical process.

Burmy, my sentiments, EXACTLY! Ugh, I soooo badly want some of this phantom merchandise. I don’t have any real goals or dreams, but I think I have one now: Acquire phantom merchandise! There must be a Lakers NBA Championship 2011 shirt somewhere!

At least all the “phantom” gear is donated by the MLB to charitys, its not like it is being thrown away… From what i have heard the NFL, NHL, NBA, and WNBA donate all the loser gear too.

RedSox44, that might be true….still, it is a terrible waste……and that pennant flag is just too dumb……nothing to do with it now, except trow it in the garbage container….well i guess the children who made that shirt and cap will now get to keep it….or maybe get it as a x-mas bonus…….. i know they don´t celebrate that….but still, LOL

Thomas, if they don’t make World Series Champions and League Champions t-shirts and other merch well before the champion is crowned, then the merch will be running in very short supply when a team actually wins.
