A jersey worn by Babe Ruth during the 1920 season, his first as a New York Yankee, sold during an auction last month for $4,415,658 (US).
The Yankees road jersey, manufactured by Spalding and pre-dating uniform numbers (so no famous #3 on the back), was purchased by Lelands.com who plans on re-selling the jersey privately shortly.
“Such a spectacular piece will find a home with one of our private clients who truly appreciates its historic significance,” Lelands.com president Michael Heffner said in a statement.
Ruth ended up dominating the baseball world during that 1920 season, smashing the single-season home run record with 54 while putting up a ho-hum .376 batting average. When Ruth retired in 1935 he had amassed 714 home runs, a record which stood for nearly 40 years.
