The newest member of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey have unveiled their logo.
Chosen via a “design-the-logo” contest, the Cornwall River Kings displayed their first logo since the team relocated from Windsor, Quebec at a press conference Friday. The River Kings are the first and only Ontario-based team in the otherwise all-Quebec teamed Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey.
In an unusual move the uniform was unveiled before the logo, two weeks ago – when announcing the name of the team a blank uniform template was on display giving fans an idea of what they’d be working with for the “design the logo” contest.
“Many different styles were submitted and all were well done. It came down to a modern look to really stand out on the new jerseys” – River Kings director of hockey operations Mitch Gagne
The uniform template, based off of the Cornwall Royals – a Jr. hockey team who played in Cornwall from the ’70s until the early ’90s before relocating to Newmarket, eventually becoming the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League.
Fun Fact, the first hockey game I ever went to was a Cornwall Royals game in Cornwall. It was the first round of the 1989 OHL playoffs and the Royals were hosting the Toronto Marlboros, I think the Royals beat them something like 12-3? It must have left a lasting impression, I wasn’t a sports fan before that game and just look at me now… anyways back to the article
The winning logo was submitted by Cornwall’s Elisa Tardiff, it features the team name arched in the original colours of the Royals – red, white, and blue. Above the arched text is a graphical representation of Cornwall’s Seaway International Bridge in grey, with a crown above everything.
For her troubles, Elisa Tardiff received a pair of season tickets to the River Kings inaugural season.
“Having the logo designed by someone (from Cornwall) was very important to the organization as we want to truly be a local team from the owners, and staff, right down to the team logo.” – Mitch Gagne to the Cornwall Seaway News
The River Kings inaugural season gets underway this October.
