As part of their 20th anniversary celebrations the Anaheim Ducks will be taking to the ice wearing the original uniforms of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on October 13th vs Ottawa. Although if I were the Ducks I’d have used the one game at home this season against Ottawa, the team they beat to win the Cup, to celebrate the clubs only championship and perhaps wear uniforms featuring the 2007 Stanley Cup Final patch. Then again I’m not in marketing… anymore.
Multiple online reports (although none from the team) suggest the team will be wearing the eggplant and jades, which would have been the road uniform during their inaugural season.
Anaheim spent their first 12 seasons in the National Hockey League as the Mighty Ducks, named after a kid’s hockey movie released by their original owners just prior to them getting the expansion franchise for the 1993-94 season. The name was ridiculed by hockey fans everywhere over the age of 13 until eventually new owners removed the “Mighty” from the name just in time for their name to be forever engraved onto the Stanley Cup in 2006-07. Phew.
The Ducks will also be wearing a 20th anniversary patch on their jerseys throughout the 2013-14 season, which you can see on Dustin Penner in the photo below:
There are reportedly more throwback nights planned throughout the season, we’ll share the dates with you once we get them.
