We’ve been getting a lot of traffic to the site during the World Series with readers looking for the reason why the Boston Red Sox are wearing the black armband on their road grey uniforms.
The armband is nothing new, the Red Sox added it to their road grey jersey back on April 16th, 2013 and have worn it (on the grey jersey only) ever since.
It was added to honour those affected by the Boston Marathon Terrorist bombings on April 15th. They wear the Boston Strong patch instead of the armband on their home white, red alternate, and blue alternate jerseys.
The team has never said why there’s the difference in honouring the victims between jerseys, it’s possible that since the attack happened while the team was on the road preparing to go on a road trip their time to put together a memorial patch was limited – hence the simple armband.
