Calgary Flames Unveil New Third Uniform

Calgary Flames New Alternate Jersey 2013-14

The Calgary Flames officially unveiled their new alternate uniform at a fan event yesterday afternoon.

The new uniform, to be worn sporadically throughout the 2013-14 season (full schedule later in article) was leaked a month ago courtesy a roster update in EA Sports’ NHL14 video game. A teaser video released by the Flames a few weeks afterwards confirmed this leak to be accurate.

What we got is a red uniform with black shoulders, a new shoulder logo, a scripted wordmark across the front, and a lace-up collar.

On the back of the jersey is a new two-colour font the Flames have not previously used. White numbers with black trim, the names in a similar style.

With the jersey is the same gloves and same pants as the standard home and road set but a slightly different sock design… *very slightly* different.

Our only shot of the new socks from the unveiling shows black, white, and yellow stripes on red

The sock is still red with black, white, yellow stripes however the stripes have a thicker black and yellow stripe than normal, the regular home uniform sock features thin black and yellow stripes with a wide white one in between. A very subtle change that I doubt any of us would have noticed.

“Many of our fans have been asking us for a third jersey. We listen. And we believe we have delivered a third jersey that will appeal to those who wanted a third jersey while adding to our classic vintage jersey and solid current jersey.” – Jim Peplinski, Calgary Flames VP of Business Development

The Flames began the process of designing the new third uniform in the Spring of 2012 when they met with design reps from the NHL and Reebok. The new uniform is meant to combine the western heritage of Calgary, the vast Alberta landscape, and the legacy of the Calgary Flames.

Calgary Flames Third Jersey Concept Logos
Some of the proposed logos and designs for the new Flames third jersey, the final design was a blend of several of these concepts

Designers came up with many proposals, the final design was a blend of several of those concepts. The design was finalized earlier this summer. You can see some of those concepts in the image above, check out that cowboy boot/skate combo – VERY reminiscent of the old Denver Spurs WHA logo.

“Personally I like it because I am very proud of our city and every time the Flames wear our third jersey ‘Calgary’ is front and centre on television screens and newspapers around the world.” – Peplinski

On the shoulder, the new patch is a circle with a landscape design inside, your typical Alberta scenery. The vast wheatfields of the eastern portion of the province is seen at the bottom depicted as 12 vertical yellow lines. Behind the wheat, the Rocky Mountains, which dominate the western border of Alberta. A rising setting sun is shown above the mountain range, a white “C” inside the sun design is above a diagonal white “F” on one of the mountains representing “Calgary Flames”. Above it all is a red half circle with “FLAMES” arched inside in white.

The Flames also added a nod to their past by incorporating the old Atlanta Flames primary logo, an “A” with a flame inside, as the alternate captains patch for this jersey.

Like most new jerseys being designed these days, there’s an inner-collar design which is very similar to the new shoulder logo. There are slight differences in the design of the wheat, and you’ll notice there is no “CF” design in the mountains, nor is there a sun in the background of it.
