Toronto Marlies Unveil Retro Jersey for Outdoor Game

Toronto Marlies Outdoor Jersey 2013-2014

The American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies today unveiled their special uniform to be worn for their outdoor game in Detroit next month.

As is usually the case for these outdoor games, the jersey is very retro-inspired, based mostly off of the uniforms worn by the Toronto Marlboros teams of the 1950s. The Marlboros were both an amateur and a junior team which called Maple Leaf Gardens home until the 1989 season, the Toronto Marlies team name and secondary branding are based off of this team.

To be honest, at first glance I loved the jersey but thought “ugh, why’d they have to add those modern sleeves to such a classic design”… well, apparently the original jersey had sleeves pretty much just like this one. The Marlies one has just been updated to reflect the current team name and colours:

Jerseys are available for sale now, in-person, at the Real Sports shop at Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

The Marlies and Grand Rapids Griffins will play an outdoor game at Comerica Park just two days prior to the 2014 NHL Winter Classic, the Marlies/Griffins game is part of the overall outdoor hockey festival being held in the Detroit area that weekend.
