Comparing the old with the new… I kinda suddenly miss the old ones:

Original article below:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers unveiled their new road uniform this morning via their official website and social media channels, two days before the scheduled press conference.

The new uniform (quoting the Bucs, here) “honours the Buccaneers’ rich tradition while boldly bringing the team into the future through a modern industrial design aesthetic”… plus it’s player numbers look like those found on a digital alarm clock (thank you Todd Radom)

What’s up with those numbers? They’re supposed to be sliced up the same way as historical buccaneer blade carvings, yup, that’s seriously the reason. They also have a reflective chrome border around them, along with their previously released chrome facemasks.

These are both firsts in the NFL… in other words – it hasn’t been done before, and probably for very good reasons.

On the jersey itself, the shade of red has been lightened as seen previously in the new logo set, orange has been added as an homage to the original “creamsicle” flavoured Buccaneers uniforms of the 1970s and 80s.

“Today marks the culmination of more than two years of research and planning to bring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into a new and exciting era of our history. We worked closely with our partners at Nike to design a uniform that would set the standard for both design and functionality. The result is a sleek, modern design that honours our championship past while also establishing a new, bolder identity moving forward.” – Buccaneers co-chairman Edward Glazer

Seriously, substitute “Tampa Bay Buccaneers” from that quote above with any other team and it basically applies to any Nike uniform unveiling news release. It’s like a Mad Libs for bad uniform design.

Mentioned in the official news release but not evident in the one photo released is the patches on each shoulder… “The redesigned wooden ship is positioned on the right shoulder and the abbreviated “BUCS” moniker on the left.” That doesn’t appear to be the case in the photo, perhaps a late addition or a late subtraction? We’ll find out.

Reactions to the new look are pretty much what you’d expect:

If we were to simply swap those interesting new numbers for plain-old block font would it look any better? I think so:

Tampa Bay’s new uniforms are still now scheduled for a full unveiling on March 5th at 2pm ET today, check back then for the pics.
