Earlier in March, the US Men’s National Soccer Team unveiled their new primary kits for the 2014 World Cup, and a lot of people noted that they looked a lot like our friends across the pond, England. Well, the Three Lions have unveiled their new set of kits for the World Cup and sure enough, the USMNT and England will look nearly exactly alike, as far as the primary kits are concerned.
As far as England are concerned, this design isn’t anything new, and if anything it’s a continuance of what has become a staple look for them under the Nike (and Umbro) umbrella: Plain white shirt with the iconic Three Lions crest on the chest with plain white shorts and plain white socks. According to Nike’s official press release on the jerseys, the inspiration for this kit comes from what they wore to the 1970 World Cup, which was a completely white strip from top to bottom as well. Retro inspiration or not, it still would have been a major surprise to see them wear something with a major striping pattern anywhere on the shirt or shorts, so it’s not exactly a shock to see that they’ve gone the plain route again. It’s a look that England have turned into their identity as of late, and it appears that they’re sticking to it.
The clash kit is another nod to tradition, as England have gone with their normal red shirt-white shorts-red socks strip instead of choosing to experiment with navy or even gray as they’ve done in the past. The kit itself is just as simple and clean as the primary kit, with the only bit of striping being a very thin red stripe going down the side of the shorts. Other than that, the kit is very simple and as usual, England fans will be hoping that the kit brings good luck, just as it did back in 1966.
Overall, there are really no surprises here, and sometimes that can be a very good thing. As we mentioned before, it’s an extremely similar look to what the USMNT ended up wearing, other than the collar and the clash strip (which is probably going to look much different from what England’s clash kit ended up being). This might be a plain look, but it’s still a very solid and classy look for the Three Lions as they head to Brazil with the hopes of finally winning another World Cup. But what do you think? Do you agree that it’s a good look, or is it too boring for you?
