According to several reports, one of which you can find here, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and his deputy Bill Daly were both in Seattle this past week meeting with city and county officials.
Sources say the meetings were simply to check in on progress of the new hockey/basketball arena proposed in the SoDo area of Seattle, Bettman has stated in the past that the league is interested in the Seattle market but has “building concerns”.
So that leads us to this… when Seattle finally gets it’s NHL team what should it be called?
The obvious top contender would be the Seattle Metropolitans (or “Mets”) for short, the Mets, then of the PCHL, were the first U.S.-based team to win the Stanley Cup, beating the Montreal Canadiens in 1917 (also a good tie-in with the 100th anniversary of that feat). You can see their original logos from the 1910s right here.
What about Seattle Emeralds? A nod to the city’s nickname “The Emerald City”. The world could use another green team.
We’ve seen some great ideas on the Creamer Boards attached to names like the Seattle Sea Lions or (my favourite) Seattle Kraken.
So this is your chance to come up with whatever name you like, post them in the comments below, on our Facebook page, or send us a Tweet. We’ll pick our top 5 and hold a vote. Maybe we’ll even throw in a prize for whoever picks the winning name.
