Pics: Edwin Encarnacion Lou-ses His Gehrig Patch

Edwin Encarnacion 2014

Yesterday Major League Baseball paid tribute to the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s famous “Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth” speech by having all players wear a temporary patch depicting the moment.

These temporary patches are added quite quickly, and with the intention to be removed easily following the game. It allows teams to not have to order an entire new set of jerseys for the event as well as offer the patches for sale after the game.

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion’s patch clearly had no intention of sticking around for all 12 innings of the Jays-A’s game, as you’ll see in this Zapruder-like series of stills.

Encarnacion’s patch was already falling off in the Top of the First as he made his way to the plate for his first at bat of the game:

In the bottom of the second, Edwin dove to make a defensive play at first base, taking his patch completely off the jersey:

Edwin noticed the patch was missing and tried to re-apply it during a break in play, most probably would have just left it lying there:

But it was of no use, that patch was done, by his next at bat it was gone completely:

Thanks to Samuel Lam for the heads up that the patch was starting to fall off in the first. And yes… I really spent my Saturday morning combing through yesterdays game to find these stills – I’m aware of how silly that seems.
