The Tampa Bay Lightning are teasing us with a sneak peek at their new third jersey courtesy a post on their Facebook page earlier today.
The photo shows team captain Steven Stamkos wearing a dark jersey and helmet (
presumably black, but the photo is in black and white so we can’t say for sure UPDATE: We now know that the jersey is indeed black).
What we see is white stripes going down the entirety of each arm from collar to cuff, a basic collar with no laces. You can barely make out what looks to be a shoulder patch on his left shoulder:
Across the side of the helmet is a “TAMPA BAY” wordmark, there may also be a marking below this script or that could simply be a reflection of light on the helmet. Photo… enhance!
Presently the Lightning wear their primary logo on the side of their helmet, that wordmark we see above is likely in the same style as the one we see on their road jersey:
If black, this would mark the first mostly-black uniform the Lightning have worn since their switch to blue when their rebrand occurred prior to the 2011-12 season. The Tampa Bay Lightning wore a black jersey as their primary road (and later home) uniform colour from their first season in 1992-93 until 2010-11.
UPDATE (Sep 11/14 10:30am ET):
The Tampa Bay Lightning have added an additional image to their social media platforms, this new graphic shows the same photo of Stamkos as seen earlier in this post however makes it clear the jersey will be black and it will be unveiled on September 27th at their Fan Fest.
UPDATE (Sep 27/14 9:00am ET)
The new jersey is coming later today, scheduled to be unveiled at 11:45am ET — since this story the Lightning have unveiled an additional image of the new uniform which shows the shoulder patch is the same as what’s worn on their home and road as well as a clearer view of the helmet logo.
We’ll be covering the unveiling in a separate post.
Shout out to @Ray_Waldron for the heads up on this one, thanks Ray!
