Oklahoma State, New Mexico State Reach Agreement Concerning Similar Logos

OSU NMSU F

Back in October, word got out that Oklahoma State was suing New Mexico State over the usage of the Pistol Pete logo that you see above. The fella on the left that’s decked out in maroon is referred to as “Classic Aggie,” and as you can clearly see, it bears a strong resemblance to the OSU cowboy that you see on the right decked out in orange.

Fortunately, the two schools have reportedly come to an agreement when it comes to NMSU’s usage of “Classic Aggie:”

A licensing agreement announced Wednesday will have NMSU pay Oklahoma State $10 a year to be allowed to continue using “Classic Aggie” on items sold through the NMSU bookstore.

However, NMSU can sell or give away only 3,000 such items annually.

Yes, you read that right: NMSU will only have to pay $10 a year to continue using it. That’s not a bad agreement at all. On a somewhat related term, I’m going to take the opportunity to say that if NMSU is paying $10 to keep on using the Classic Aggie, they may as well add another $10 to convince OSU to stop using this weird mascot.

Pistol PeteNMSU actually had a similarly creepy mascot as well, as you can see below:

Eventually, they came to their senses and decided to just have a regular ol’ cowboy out there.

Pistol Pete 2I will take this fella with the hilariously-fake looking mustache over that creepy plastic head any day, and again, NMSU should’ve sweetened the pot by adding another $10 to make sure that OSU did the same thing NMSU did. Or would that cause another lawsuit since both cowboys would look too similar? My head’s spinning now, but at least it’s not a plastic head like the one Oklahoma State’s mascot has. Anyways, that’s the end of my digression: The point is that it seems like the two schools have come to an amicable agreement, and that’s the important thing.
