The Gulls are returning to San Diego.
Expected to be unveiled later today, the Anaheim Ducks new AHL farm club will be known as the San Diego Gulls when they suit up this fall. This via the official SanDiegoAHL.com website who apparently accidentally made the name change and logo live before the unveiling took place.
Gulls has been a part of San Diego hockey history for several years in several minor hockey leagues, dating back to the old Western Hockey League in 1966. They also had runs in the International League from 1990-95 (see logo) and the WCHL/ECHL from 1995-2006. There’s also a junior league team, currently active and known as the Gulls in San Diego which has been around since 2001.
The new Gulls logo is a slight modernization on what the club last used in the ECHL in 2006, but the best part – by far – is the inclusion of a seagull in the negative space between the “L” and “S” in “GULLS”.
We’re sure there will be more to come when the official unveil happens, scheduled for later this afternoon.
