Back in January, Cardiff City FC owner (and rumored Bond villain) Vincent Tan revealed that he had a change of heart when it came to the colors of his now-2nd tier English football club in the Welsh capital. After controversially changing the colors and nickname of the club from blue to red and ‘Bluebirds’ to ‘Dragons,’ respectively upon taking over the club, Tan recently decided (with a bit of coercion from his dear mother) that it was time to make the old things new again, and in January, the club reverted back to all things blue. The Bluebirds have been wearing blue at home since January 10th.
Now, in March, the club has made the return to blue official by unveiling their new crest.
The club’s traditional Bluebird icon, which was relegated to being nothing more than a secondary garnish to the main course of a red dragon in the previous crest, has returned to its rightful position of front and center in the crest. Meanwhile, Tan’s beloved dragon icon has swapped places with the Bluebird and has also been redesigned a bit in an effort to make it look more like a hybrid Welsh/Asian dragon. In addition to the new dragon, red still plays a role as an outline color in the crest. Judging by the reaction to the unveiling on twitter, some fans aren’t exactly thrilled with this addition.
For comparison’s sake, here are the two logos side-by-side.
The club itself has posted an in-depth breakdown of the thought process that went into creating the new logo, and it’s definitely worth taking a look at.
But, what do you think? Upgrade? Downgrade?
