Well you don’t see this very often.
The Washington Wizards new logo switch isn’t for the 2015-16 season, it’s for right now, like right now that’s their new logo. A mid-season switch. Rare.
We contacted the Wizards after growing suspicious of the amount of regular use the new logo was already getting on various media outlets (while other new logos, such as the Raptors and Bucks were not), their response was short but they confirmed our thoughts, “it is effective immediately”.
Washington joins past teams such as the 1990 Chicago White Sox, the 1967 California/Oakland Seals, and the Toronto Maple Leafs who did this twice (1927 switch from St Pats to Maple Leafs and 1967) as teams to unveil and adopt a new look during a season. The Pittsburgh Penguins changed their colour scheme and uniforms midway through the 1980 season but the logo remained identical.
This also sets up for a very rare logo matchup in the first round of the playoffs, the Wizards and their new logo are facing the Toronto Raptors who will be dropping their current logo at the conclusion of these playoffs.
