It’s looking like “The 6ix” won’t be the only Toronto area code to be getting some basketball love this year.
Knowing that the Toronto Raptors were setting up a NBA D-League club in the area for the upcoming season I did my usual searching for any potential leaks surrounding it and I came across this… the NBA has registered several domain names related to “Raptors 905”, not 905ers, not 905s, just 905. These names include raptors905.com and .ca, as well as both extensions for 905raptors. These registrations all took place within the last 3 weeks.
This struck my interest and led to further digging where I found the Twitter and Instagram handles for “Raptors905” were recently taken and left blank.
Then came the big find… the Westchester Knicks NBA D-League team page listed “RAPTORS 905” ever-so-briefly on their list of teams in the league. No logo, unfortunately. Bingo.
Seems pretty legit. The only question is whether or not there is a space in the name. Twitter says no, the Westchester page said yes.
“905” is the area code used by the suburb area surrounding Toronto in all directions (well, except for the south, fish don’t need area codes), it’s also a way to quickly describe the location of something or someone in the Toronto-area. “I live in the 905”, for example.
Expect an announcement by the team soon, the new season is quickly approaching after all.
