A while back, I wrote about how I absolutely hated the Green Bay Packers’ throwback uniforms. You know, the navy blue ones that were based on uniforms that the Packers wore back in the late 1920s and were eventually turned into something that was unrecognizable thanks to the NFL’s weird helmet rules? Those throwbacks were bottom-of-the-barrel quality, and even casual fans of the uniform game knew that those were some pretty bad throwbacks.
This week, we got a small bit of positive news on this front. The good news is that my idea didn’t fall on deaf ears, as the Packers did indeed shelve those uniforms. That’s a positive! Their new throwback uniforms now come from the Curly Lambeau eara of the squad:
The uniforms are definitely an upgrade; That’s for sure. In fact, if they look familiar to you, then that’s because they actually wore a variation of this design back in 1994 when the entire league celebrated the NFL’s 75th season with throwbacks around the league.
Now, this new throwback actually makes a bit of historical sense since the Packers did indeed wear yellow helmets with these uniforms, unlike the Acme throwback set in which the Packers never wore yellow helmets with. So that’s definitely a step in the right direction! Good job, Packers!
However, one of my main issues is the fact that the team still used a green facemask and green “Packers” script on the helmet bumper. Did they fix that (And we know it’s possible for teams to wear different facemasks now, since the Dolphins are wearing gray facemasks for their throwbacks when they normally wear white facemasks)?
*sigh*
Well, you can’t always get what you want, right? Granted, I personally can’t really determine whether or not a gray facemask or a navy facemask would work here, but either option would be better than the green facemask, whiich just has to go in this case. Maybe the NFL rule is still in effect, but it’d look so much better with another color facemask. So, so much better.
Overall, I can’t really complain too much. This is definitely an improvement over the Acme Packers throwbacks, and I’m sure that I won’t be hearing my family complain about it on Sundays in the Fall (or at least I hope so). I still think that the Packers have plenty of superior options to choose from that are actually green and gold (seriously, take a trip to their page on Gridiron-Uniforms.com and just browse for a minute. You’ll see what I mean), but if they’re going to stay on the navy-and-gold path of throwbacks, then I can’t really complain all that much about these new throwbacks. It’s not the best throwback set that the Packers could choose from, but it’s not the worst, in my opinion.
What do you guys think? Do you agree with my idea here, or do you think I’ve just spent the past couple of minutes raving like a lunatic? Let me know what you think!
